FAQ

Here are a list of common (qna style) frequently asked questions:

Something isn't working, what do I do?

Make sure you're using Chrome. Edge may also work, but it's not guaranteed.
Read the rest of the FAQs below and see if you spot your issue.

How do I work on a project with someone else?

At the moment, the best way is to use a shared Google sheet, and then have one person making the layouts in Dex. Gil and Doug are working towards proper collab support.

Can hide a zone on certain cards and not others?

Yes! You can either do it an automatic way by setting your zone to auto like this:
Alternatively you can show or hide a zone by default, and then reveal/hide it on specific cards using  The Style Column .

Can I use image urls in my spreadsheet?

Unfortunately no, you need to upload your images. We need to host the images ourselves so we can optimise them for faster performance. Also some of our exports don't work with externally hosted images.

Can I make double-sided cards?

Yes, you want to select the 'unique cards' back type for the component. Check out the  Card Backs  section.

How do I try out the new pdf exporter?

See New PDF export in the  PDF  section.

Can I make my SVG images be stretchy?

Yes! See  Your images  for more details.

Can I make my own paragraph separator?

Yes, to do this, create your own  Custom Text Styles . Make a text style that is:
Display set to 'block' (instead of 'inline flex')
Set height at 50 (instead of 'auto') or any other size you want.
Then you can use it whererever you want a custom break. One nice thing here is if you decide you want to change the height later, you can do so in one place, and have it update everywhere.

Can I get an class account for my School or University?

Yes! We have functionality now to have Teacher accounts which include a custom number of student seats. The Teacher can see the student projects and monitor their progress etc. which is perfect for a game design course or a homeschool family account etc. Please email Gil directly at  dextrous.is.fun@gmail.com  and he can set you up with a custom account for this.

Will there be an offline desktop version of Dextrous?

Maybe in the distant future, but not now. We're intentionally online because we will be offering collaboration features and hopefully eventually online playtesting options etc. which an internet connection is necessary for. It's also just not our business model. Paying for something once sounds great in theory, but actually it incentivises devs to not support it and just release a sequel etc. We're not interested in that kind of thing - we want something sustainable and supported for the next 20 years at least. We are making our own games and want to do that full time for decades to come - with this tool.

Can I link the same CSV column to two zones?

Not yet. But you can do a simple column duplication in your spreadsheet, by using a formula like this:
=A2
If you want to avoid seeing a lot of columns in your speadsheet, consider using multiple worksheets:  📜Fewer Columns in G Sheets

Can I make a layout with zones that are the size of another of my layouts (ie for a player mat where cards go?)

Absolutely. Let's say you wanted to make a player mat for a card game with zones for discard piles or deck piles that are the same size as your poker size card layout. If you click a zone in the layout editor then open layout settings (3 dots top right), you can select 'resize zone' and then select one of the standard sizes (ie a poker card). This will give you a zone the size of the your card layout, which will help you make designs like player mats.
Don't forget too if you have a totally custom sized layout too, you can simply copy any zone from it (ctrl+c) and then paste it into your player mat layout (ctrl+z).
